“How Did YOU Get To Teach At Kai Cenat’s Streamer University?!”
Cindy On Being At The White-Hot Epicenter Of Popular Culture That Mainstream Media Completely Ignored
Dearest Dear Cindy subscribers,
This week I’m rolling up many questions on the same theme into one - and in addition, providing some observations on a truly amazing experience.
A while back, I saw that Kai Cenat was launching Streamer University, encouraging streamers to apply to enroll as students, and welcoming applications from professors to teach.
I thought, what the hell, let’s do this for a laugh, and, emboldened by the mention of ‘Sex education’ as part of the curriculum, filled out the application form and did a little video on why I wanted to teach a class on ‘How to make love, not porn’ at Streamer University.
Apparently a million people applied immediately when the site launched, crashing it. I honestly thought I had no chance of being accepted. So, unlike the rest of Kai’s followers, I did not breathlessly wait for the big reveal of who had been accepted. I was dealing with my own MakeLoveNotPorn shitstorm of being de-banked twice in two months, as I shared in ‘This Is My Life Still, In 2025’, so I had other things on my mind. The night Kai made the big announcement, Friday May 16, my dear friend Xuan kindly took me out to dinner and poured several badly-needed martinis down my throat. I returned home tanked, checked out social media, and went….. WTAF 😮
I was, quite frankly, absolutely gobsmacked.
I then had to swing into action to clear my calendar for the coming week, of a trip to San Francisco and a Memorial Day weekend with friends in the Hudson Valley, to be flown along with the other professors and 120 or so students, all expenses paid, to a mystery campus location which we were told to keep completely confidential (but which the world now knows was Akron University in Ohio), Wednesday-Sunday May 21-25.
I have SO MANY THOUGHTS about my (fantastic) experience. I want to do them justice, and appropriately, so I’m thinking long-form YouTube video, or even doing my first livestream on Twitch 😂 But I want to share just a few observations with you, my beloved Dear Cindy subscribers.
What Kai Cenat created for Streamer University was incredible.
Kai set out to replicate the university experience for all the students - who had never been to university, and who may not go to university. Each professor taught four classes of 30 students each. We were encouraged to do rollcall at the start, and to report on any bad behavior (Kai also replicated the time-honored tradition of the deeply unnerving summons to and wait outside the Dean’s office, with repercussions for students and professors behaving badly).
We were treated to a pep rally on the football field, with a marching band and cheer squad, and concession stands distributing free sodas and snacks. There was a dodgeball competition in the gym. There was a pool party. We all slept in dorm rooms. We all ate in the student cafeteria. And the swag game was strong - tons of freebies: Streamer University branded apparel and study materials, Kai’s Tone range of toiletries and Tone-branded robes and bags, T-Mobile phones etc etc.
All designed to create a fun learning environment where every streamer could level up their game, their following, and their monetization.
I could not have felt more welcome.
I headed to Streamer University feeling, to be honest, a bit nervous - very much ‘one of these things is not like the others’.
As I said when I introduced myself at Orientation, “I am far and away the oldest person at Streamer University - I am the Professor McGonagall of this faculty.”
You can watch my introduction between 17:56-20.10.
For the duration of my time at Streamer University, everybody was absolutely lovely - so welcoming and kind. Kai was fantastic; his assistant Bri (who must have been up to her eyeballs with everything she was dealing with) was incredible; his entire Night management team were so helpful and responsive. And the other professors and students were great. Even the young gentlemen who flatteringly hit on me after learning I date younger men, did so charmingly and respectfully 😂 I so enjoyed meeting, talking to and teaching everyone.
The women of Streamer University were amazing.
On the Friday night, the female students organized a sorority hang, where we went round the room (the YouTube creator lounge in the basement of our dorm building), and everyone introduced themselves, how old they were (ages ranged from 19 to 38, and then of course there was me at 65 😂), talked about what they did (streaming and content-wise) and where they needed support. They also talked frankly about how all the viral videos coming out of Streamer University featured the guys, and the need to represent the women more and to make sure they created content that did that.
In a male-dominated environment and world, I was so impressed. I made sure to attend India Love’s and CookinWitKya’s classes, which I thought were excellent. It takes guts, individuality and talent to stand out as a woman streamer, and every one of them at Streamer University had plenty.
I was pleased with the responses to my class.
I was very touched by the young gentleman who told me he loved my class and said, “You made me want to read more books. I want to be able to know and use more words like the way you speak.”
BUT….
I was staggered at the lack of mainstream media coverage.
Streamer University was THE popular culture event of the year to date. My friends found out I was there because the teens in their lives were telling them. It was massively watched - 23 million hours watched on the Streamer University category on Twitch (that’s 2,750 years of content!). It was covered in Black media, and in streamer/gamer-focused media. But - nothing in the mainstream media.
If it had been Mr Beast (who did make an appearance on video at Orientation), would that have been the case?
I was staggered at the lack of interest from my own industry - advertising.
My industry prides itself on leveraging and capitalizing on culture. Yet….
I have many more thoughts - but as MakeLoveNotPorn was de-banked yet again last week (yes, that’s three times in two months, gotta be some kind of record), I’ve had to focus on my own business emergency. Watch this space in due course for ‘Cindy Becomes A Streamer’ continued Streamer University coverage, because I have a lot more to say….
